If you’re running an eCommerce business, then you know the importance of tracking your data. Without analytics, it’s difficult to understand what’s working and what isn’t, and how to improve your website and business. In this blog post, we’ll show you how to set up analytics in Magento and BigCommerce. We’ll cover both the free and paid options, so you can choose the one that’s best for your business. Before setting up Magento or BigCommerce though, it’s important you have Google Analytics set up for your site.
Setting Up Google Analytics
If you haven’t done so already, you need to set up Google Analytics for your site. It’s free to use and provides tons of data on who is visiting your website, what they’re doing while they’re there, and how they found you. To set it up, create a free account at google.com/analytics. Once you have an account, add your website by clicking the “Add Property” button and following the steps.
These steps include:
- Entering your website’s name and URL
- Selecting the type of website you have (in most cases, this will be “website”)
- Choosing whether to track a single domain or multiple domains
- Adding tracking code to your website
Once you have Google Analytics set up, you’re ready to start setting up analytics in Magento or BigCommerce.
Once you’ve added the tracking extension to your site it’s important to set up enhanced e-commerce tracking for Google Analytics. You can do this in the Google Analytics admin panel under eCommerce Settings. Click on Enable Ecommerce and Enable Enhanced Ecommerce Reporting.
Setting Up Magento Analytics
In Magento, there are a few different options for setting up analytics. The first is to use the built-in Google Analytics API. This integration provides basic reporting on page views, unique visitors, and other data. To set it up, go to the Admin Panel and then Stores > Setting > Configuration. On the configuration page, open the sales panel and click on Google API. Enter your Google Analytics ID into the field for account number.
If you want more detailed analytics, then there are several paid extensions available in the Adobe Magento Marketplace. One such option is the Actionable Google Analytics extension by Tatvic Analytics. This app allows for more detailed behavior analysis and enhanced eCommerce reports. To set it up, go to the Adobe Magento Marketplace and purchase the package that best fits your needs.
Setting Up BigCommerce Analytics
In BigCommerce, there are also a few different options for setting up analytics. The first is to use the built-in Google Analytics integration. This integration is currently known as Google Analytics 4 or GA4 but has previously gone by the name App+Web. This integration provides basic reporting on page views, unique visitors, and other data. Anyone using a Stencil or Blueprint theme can use this integration but only those using Cornerstone or a theme that supports data tags will experience full functionality. For more information see Big Commerce’s requirements and limitations.
To set it up, go to Advanced Settings > Data Solutions, and click connect next to Google Analytics. Select Property ID and enter your Google Analytics ID.
If you want more detailed analytics, then there are several paid options available on the BigCommerce App Marketplace. One such app is Connector for Google Analytics by Littledata. This app provides reports on transactions, revenue, and other data. It also includes features like eCommerce tracking and conversion rate optimization. To set it up, click on Get This App in the BigCommerce app marketplace and follow the download instructions.
Which Option is Best for You?
For Magento: The best option for you depends on your needs and budget. If you’re just starting out, then the Mage_Analytics module is a good option. It’s free, and it provides basic reporting on page views and unique visitors. If you need more detailed analytics, then the Google Analytics for Magento module is a good option. It’s paid, but it provides reports on transactions, revenue, and other data.
For BigCommerce: The best option will again depend on your needs and budget. For beginners, the free integration is the place to start. If you need more detailed analytics, then the Google Analytics for BigCommerce app is a good option. It’s paid, but it provides reports on transactions, revenue, and other data. Plus, it integrates with Google Analytics so you can use all of the features of Google Analytics.
No matter which option you choose, setting up analytics is an important step in improving your eCommerce business. With accurate data, you can make informed decisions about how to improve your website and business.
